UNDP: CIVIC ENGAGEMENT OF MONGOLIAN YOUTH WILL IMPROVE

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The United Nations Development Programme and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Mongolia signed a project on April 13 that aims to improve civic engagement of Mongolia’s youth because their political participation has been steadily declining in the country.

Creation of a democratic space and civic engagement of youth are becoming "more important than ever in the current context of the country, where high economic growth has not yet translated into prosperity and equal opportunities for all".

“Youth are the future of any country. They need the knowledge and opportunity to be fully engaged in political participation at all levels,” said Sezin Sinanoglu, UNDP Resident Representative, who has signed the project document with G. Zandanshatar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The overall objective of the $300,000 project, to be carried out from 2012-2014, is to develop democratic skills of Mongolia’s 15-24 year olds, especially in the areas of problem-solving and decision-making. New education materials will be created for school curriculum, and teachers will be trained in civic education.

Activities will also include dialogues between youth and policy-makers on improving community life, and social media will be used to engage youth groups in discussions on peace, freedom, justice, and respect for human rights.

The Government of Mongolia has shown a growing interest and commitment to strengthening civic education in the country’s school curricula. Mongolia has so far developed textbook on civic education for early grades.

This project will help to develop national standards on civic education at higher levels. Teacher training on civil education and preparation of teaching materials have become a national priority.

The Centre for Citizenship Education will serve as the implementing partner for the project.
