Poverty reduced by 9.4 percent in 2011

According to the National Statistic Committee (NSC) data on Tuesday, poverty level in Mongolia was reduced by 9.4 percent in 2011 specially, in countryside area after overcome of 2010 bad snow and draught.

The NSC and World Bank have jointly researched the situation for six months comparing 2010 data by sample survey. Research has revealed that poverty covering in Mongolia was 29.8 percent and poverty depth was 7.6 percent.

Poverty covering in west regions is 30.2 percent, in khangai regions 38.9 percent, in central regions 27.2 percent, in east regions 34.3 percent and in Ulaanbaatar 23.5 percent. Officials noted that poverty covering has been reduced from 2.1 to 20.9 percent in every region in comparison of 2010. The research has also shown that poverty has significantly reduced in local areas relating to livestock growth.

The NSC has cooperated with WB since 2002 to strengthen statistic capacity, to research households’ income, spending and living and to account poverty levels. The NSC has planned to research households’ living in regions and it will inform data in May.

WB Permanent representative in Mongolia Coralie Gevers stated at the meeting that “Accounting of 2011 households’ data by sample survey has met the world method. The survey would be a base of poverty reducing policy in Mongolia in further. Poverty level estimation is crucial contribution from the WB.”

Head of the NSC S.Mendsaikhan told that 11.3 million animals were dead in 2010 due to bad snow. But herders overcome hard situation in 2011 and poverty level was reduced by 9.4 percent in 2011. In other words, animal husbandry has influenced to economic growth of Mongolia. Besides, households’ income and expenditure survey in every three month has shown average households’ income is MNT503,000. Income of households more than expenditure and detailed data would be informed in May.

Mongolia has 730,000 households and sample survey was casually done from 11,300 households.
