MONGOLIANS ATTEND REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF PROSECUTORS

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ Mongolia's delegation led by Ts.Byambatsogt, the Deputy General Prosecutor of Mongolia and president of Mongolia's Association of Prosecutors, participated in the 8th Asia Pacific and Middle East Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors held on April 16-19 in Chinese Taipei.

The theme for the 8th regional conference is “Combating Economic Crimes through Asset Recovery”. For the past decade, criminals have focused more on concealing financial benefits through money laundering and most of the major criminal cases involve either large amount of money or financial fraud. Victims and Prosecutors now care more about how to demonstrate justice by seizing and confiscating criminal proceeds and by properly indemnifying the damages to the victim and to society. On the other hand, swiftly moving international economic activities actually facilitate the concealment and transportation of illegal criminal proceeds. Therefore, it is the Prosecutor's urgent task to confront this challenge and to find the effective measures to prevent money laundering and to seize and confiscate criminal proceeds. The 8th IAP regional conference intends to create a platform to share and exchange experiences and hopefully to shed some lights on this difficult issue.

The Conference discussed the topics "Consideration of Non-conviction Based Asset Forfeiture", "The Development of Asset Forfeiture Legislation and International Trends", "International Cooperation in Asset Recovery", "Strategy to Combat Economic Crimes--Building an Efficient Anti-money Laundering Framework between Financial Institutions and Investigative Agencies", "Protecting Bona Fide Third Parties' Rights in Asset Recovery", and "Proper Use of Asset Forfeiture System and Returned Assets".

In the Mongolian delegation were also G.Ganzorig, a director of the Training and Research Cooperation Center, and B.Ochbadar, the General Prosecutor of Dornod aimag.
