Baldorj Cup opens golf season for seventh year

The Baldorj Cup is the largest golf tournament in Mongolia and marks the beginning of a new golf season for players who have spent the long winter in hibernation.


The late famed journalist Ts. Baldorj, who first introduced the game of golf to the Mongolian people and built the country’s first golf course, founded the tournament seven years ago. The annual Baldorj Cup Golf Tournament showcases the rapidly growing popularity of golf in Mongolia.

Saturday golfers took to the Zaan Terelj golf course at the UB-2 Resort located in Terelj National Park. This year, the number of players increased to 61 and they competed against each other for a five kilogram solid silver cup. As per tradition, there were many players from South Korea who competed in the Baldorj Cup.

Employees of Wagner Asia participated in the tournament, giving the field an international mix.

“Beginning this spring, in order to introduce more children, teenagers and adults into golf, we are organizing golf training courses, inviting foreign golf teachers, instructors and coaches. We have also made a structural change to the Association,” said N. Zoljargal, President of the Mongolian Golf Association.

The championship match was played between D. Ganbayar and B. Munkhbayar, who needed a playoff to break their tie. A mistake cost D. Ganbayar and B. Munkbaatar, the 2010 champion and 2011 runner up, found himself the winner yet again with a score of 79.

M. Sayan, A. Enerel, and S Urjinkhand squared off in the finals of the women’s compeition. A. Enerel emerged victorious with a score of 96.

The longest shot was awarded to L. Khishigdelger who drove the ball 228 meters, and honorary titles were awarded to Zag LLC’s Ts. Nemekhbaatar, the former Minister of Finance S. Sonin, and Magnai Trade’s R. Ganzorig.

During the tournament, the Ts. Baldorj Fund and Zaan Terelj Club announced that the Baldorj Cup will not only be held in the Zaan Terelj golf course but at different golf courses in later years.
